Moral Humility

Discovered this video on TED today by Jonathan Haidt on a "Moral Humility" approach to politics [HT: McLaren]. This concept of "moral humility" reminds me a lot of this post-modern theological viewpoint which says "But I could be wrong". I think this is a really positive aspect of worldview taken up within Christian theology in that it produces a much more considered, well-rounded, humble approach to thinking about God.

What if we considered the other viewpoints – rather than in a defensive, closed way – in a constructive way as we reflected on our own understanding of God? What huge effect this would have on the way we could deal with theological differences.

  • I like this approach a lot--and I think emerging generations get it. But there's still way too much demand for surety, although perhaps in America this election will show how much--or little--remains. "I know exactly what to do" may be defeated by "I think I know what to do--and if I'm wrong, we'll figure it out."
