About

I’m James Henley

James HenleyI work as Student Pastor for a missional Christian community called The Lab in Newport in South Wales.

I’m studying towards a degree in Youth & Community Work and Applied Theology at the Centre for Youth Ministry, based in Bristol.

I was born in Canterbury which is in the county of Kent in South-East England – 21 years ago.

Theology & Churchiness

I identify strongly with the “Missional” and “Emerging Church” movements:

I believe that theology that doesn’t inspire the body of Christ towards participation in the Mission of God is useless and worthless.

As well as The Lab, I’m also part of the leadership at St Paul’s Church in Newport.

Home

Since July 2008, I’ve been living in a community house with others in the Lab community, in a fairly deprived estate on the edge of Newport. We now number seven young adults between two houses. We are seeking to live as missionaries in our own community - reaching out with love, peace and justice.

My family home is in Aberystwyth in West Wales, which is where I grew up.

Music and Film

I hang out with a lot of film/media/animation students so I end up seeing a lot of great films and some not-so-great ones.

Frost/Nixon, Slumdog Millionaire and The Kite Runner are recent films I’ve seen that made me grin inside.

The Album Leaf, Imogen Heap, John MayerLoney Dear, Muse and Sigur Ros are some artists that get my heart-cells vibrating.

I lament the sameness (and lameness) of contemporary worship music – and pray for some new and fresh songs of the revolution.
