AVATAR: 4 Perspectives on the Top Grossing Film Ever

Avatar is now officially the top grossing film of all-time worldwide, making (so far) $1,849,317,325 at the box office – that’s 1.85 billion dollars. I saw it a couple of weeks ago and was captivated simply by the sheer epic proportions of the film, let alone the wealth of meaning and metaphor behind it.

Since Avatar’s release bloggers, journalists and critics have attempted to analyse and reflect on the meaning behind the film. Here are four very different perspectives I’ve read recently, which all bring a different insight into the film’s setting and storyline:

Frost/Nixon

Frost/Nixon Poster

Last Saturday, we managed to get to an advance screening of Frost/Nixon – out in the UK on January 23rd (I think it’s already out in the states). It’s written by Peter Morgan who wrote “The Queen” and directed by the incredible Ron Howard (director of Apollo 13 and A Beautiful Mind among others).

This film was incredible – very simple and yet incredibly powerful. The story was brought together really well, and Frank Langella was brilliant as Nixon. I think already this is going to be one of the best films of the year.

Get a look at the trailer here.

Best of 2008: Stuff that’s changed me

Its usual around this time to bloggers to start putting lists together to sum up the previous year – so I thought I’d provide my own. Here’s my list of a few films, albums, books, people, videos – whatever – that have left their mark on me this year. In no particular order…

Film: Changeling

changeling 2 Best of 2008: Stuff thats changed meIn the second half of this year, Changeling was the film that hit me the hardest (Trailer here). What hit me was just how easy it was for these people who really thought they were doing the right thing to get it so wrong. Angelina Jolie played a very different role really well.

Blog: The Forgotten Ways – Alan Hirsch

Throughout this year, Alan has managed to regularly turn out thought-provoking posts about missional, liminality and communitas on his blog. This is one of the few blogs in my reader that has no unread posts.

Changeling and Body of Lies

Just got back from seeing the new Ridley Scott film, Body of Lies, with a group of friends. Leo Di Caprio and Russell Crowe are on pretty good form in it. Not a bad film at all – pretty entertaining.

As well on Sunday night, I finally got around to seeing Changeling – Clint Eastwoord’s new flick. One of the most moving films I’ve ever seen – it really leaves you walking away thinking. Check out the trailer.

Tropic Thunder

Tropic-thunder2

Last night, saw Tropic Thunder – with Robert Downey Jr (as a black man), Jack Black and Ben Stiller in. It was okay – a little disappointed that it wasn't incredible after all the hype around it. Downey Jr is great playing the "dude playin' the dude, disguised as another dude". Tom Cruise also puts in a really funny performance playing the big studio executive.

Was a little disappointed though that almost all of the important plot twists – as well as some of the best lines – are given away in the trailer – leaving very little that's fresh about the storyline in the actual movie.

The start of the film, though, is genius – very clever – but I won't give away what happens.

Really want to see Pineapple Express which has just come out, and Taken – out soon – which looks pretty good. Neeson's voice sounds so cool in the trailer.

The Clone Wars

Clonewars-poster

Earlier tonight four of us decided to catch the Clone Wars – it was free since 3 of us have unlimited cards and it was Orange Wednesday. And to be honest, I wasn't impressed – none of us were.

The film was originally intended as a low budget-ish cartoon series – which was pretty obvious from the story line, voice actors, and generally sketchy animation (one of my friends is an animation graduate, so I say that with authority). And I can imagine being pretty happy sitting down with my Shredded Wheat in the morning (yes parents I am now trying to regularly eat breakfast) to watch it on Cartoon Network.

But as a feature film, it just didn't really meet the grade.

Especially when it comes up against Disney/Pixar's Wall-e which was an incredible piece of cutting edge animation. The artistic style of Clone Wars is highly stylised, as you can probably tell from the poster (trailer here) – fitting in well with the cartoon genre – a genre in which I am now an expert after spending two weeks with Cartoon Network as our only working cable channel. However, coupled with some unnatural movements and poor lip-syncing, it doesn't translate at all well onto the big screen. And whilst the storyline would have worked well as maybe a two-part cartoon episode (40mins to an hour-ish), dragging it out into a full two hours meant the inclusion of overly long action sequences and a slightly boring section in the middle of the film.

Okay, so I've rambled a bit.

Anyway. My final opinion Mr Lucas – you should have stuck with the business people's plan and made the series. No one wanted another Star Wars film – even if it was animated.

You could have brought a little extra excitement to my mornings – instead you made me waste two hours of my life.

I mean that in love, of course.

Indy returns…

Caught the first midnight showing of the new Indiana Jones film last night / this morning.

indy 4 Indy returns...

Was definitely an experience – so many awesome camera shots and great humour from Harrison Ford as the aging Indy. Jury’s still out on the storyline – there’s definitely at least one huge plot twist – but you’ll have to check it out. Oh, and Shia LeBeouf is reassuringly better than it looked like he might be in the trailers.

Love the whole mid-20th century, supernatural, mystical, slightly “James Bond”, cowboy meets explorer, pulp vibe that Indiana Jones gives off and the new film was definitely true to that. I’m not an expert, but the one of the film students I was with talked about how good it was that Spielburg was true to the feel of the original movies – you could cut bits from the new film in with stuff from the old films and it would fit in totally. Classic Indy.

The Passion

Been out of touch with TV for a while – don’t really watch it nowadays, except for a few series (mainly Skins) which I keep up to date with using 4od and iPlayer – but found The Passion randomly on the BBC iPlayer today and was pretty impressed.

1 3 The Passion

It’s a four episode retelling of the holy week narrative put together by the BBC and HBO – and from all the stuff they’ve built around it on the website and the first episode I just watched – I think it’s probably some of the most relevant, provocative Christian programming the BBC have done in a very long time.

Sure, it’s fairly inaccurate for those bible purists out there (think some Christian groups have spoken out against it), and there’s a hint of pooey existentialism in there (Jesus says a couple of times "the kingdom of God is in your hearts", and that kind of thing). And yes, they all have silly English/Welsh/Irish accents – and Jesus is white…

But…

Jesus is presented as provocative and political, but loving and humble. He challenges, he’s mysterious, and there’s this general vibe that no one really know what he’s really up to. It’s about time the world allowed Jesus to grow up past the cute, cuddly best friend and into the revolutionary man we often miss. And I think that The Passion has discovered a little of that – I love it ;-).

Here’s a link to the first episode (screened last night on BBC1) on the BBC iPlayer. Episode 2 is tonight at half 8 on BBC1, and then 3 and 4 follow on Good Friday and Easter Day.

Be interested to know what you think about it.

Vantage Point

Vantage_point_movie_poster_2

Just got back from seeing Vantage Point (and trailer here) – and it was incredible. Probably in the top two of the films I’ve seen so far this year.

It’s a film which shows the same events from five different viewpoints, with each "vantage point" revealing different aspects of the plot and missing others. Reminds me how often we need the viewpoints of others in order to see the whole picture, and why reaching shared decisions is so important.

Found it so hard this week in reaching a decision when my access to the viewpoints of others has been restricted. Think this may be a good thing rather than a bad thing.

Also, Vantage Point has the best car chase I’ve seen in a while – very cool, very gritty and very real.
