Journeys in Cyberspace – 28/10/09

Links to stuff that’s taken my interest online over the last week or so.

The Gospel for iGens

Scot Mc Knight’s article on The Gospel for iGens in Leadership Journal is really relevant and important for those engaging in mission with young people/young adults.

I’ve just caught up with FlashForward on Five on Demand (UK only) – it’s really beginning to grow on me. Also, Design for Life on BBC iPlayer looks really interesting.

Ed Stetzer’s video for The Nines is really good – “Mission is the opposite of self” (video after the jump):

From the garden to the city

14th century tapestry depicting New Jerusalem

I’ve been thinking recently, inspired by some stuff from a recent lecture at CYM, about the whole biblical meta-narrative – and in particular this idea of the story beginning with the garden and ending in the city. Beginning with Eden and ending with the new Jerusalem. I think I’ve read a few authors who have pointed this out and tried to draw observations from it – in particular recently Rob Bell’s new book and NT Wright’s Surprised by Hope.

It’s really interesting to see how we can play around with the interaction between this little bit of theology and all kinds of ideas about the way society and culture develops.

First day back at college: Assorted Thoughts on Culture

So had my first day back at CYM last Wednesday – and began the Culture, Society and Mission module. Here are two quotes and thoughts I had:

“Aesthetics are the postmodern currency of power.”

That probably needs further unpacking in a future post. And:

“Critiquing a modern faith from within modernity is like describing a box from the inside.”

Today began to sketch out the concept of culture, beginning by looking at a theology of culture – from the garden to the city. Then we went on to take a detailed look at modernity – it’s origins, vague characteristics, and then onto a critique – as well as looking at the church in the light of modernity.

We also went through the opening chapter of H. Richard Niebuhr’s Christ and Culture - which I had my first look through in the first year during a theology module. Really good, classic, go-to book.

Journeys in Cyberspace – 05/10/08

Been a busy couple of weeks with 4 days of college on top of Lab stuff kicking off. Here's some of the stuff I've had a chance to catch online.

Mark Sayers talks about the Pink Elephant in the Missional Room, and has some really helpful videos up on youtube.

Alan Hirsch comments on Social Networks.

Newport Uni CU's freshers video is very very cool and very very funny – part 1, part 2 and outtakes.

Jim Wallis speaks out on the $700bn bail-out.

Nick Page gives his first impressions on the new ESV study "man-bible".

Jon Birch's Asbojesus is still my favourite place for humour/satire.

Listening to audio of  Tom Sine at Moot when he was in the UK recently – didn't manage to get to see him in person anywhere.

The new Rob Bell book should arrive in the next couple of days. Cool cover:

I'm going to be in Oxford on Thursday to hear Mike Frost with some BCYM and Lab friends.

Reflective Worship – Peacemakers

People wanted the resources from the little mini worship time in Bristol CYM this morning ;-)

So here they are – the basic outline was from some Ikon liturgy chopped up and edited a little – and then added in a reflection on peace from the Missio Dei Breviary.

For the Sigur Ros video I played I had to use Quicktime so it isn't in the powerpoint. Here's the link to it.

CYM Alternative Worship

Yesterday a group of us organised worship for the whole CYM student body here in Oxford (I get back from Induction Week tomorrow). We kind of titled the whole thing "God is…" Some people asked for the powerpoint and music info – and I didn't get the chance to give the files to everyone who wanted them by memory stick – so here they are.

God Is…

Powerpoint: Download god_is.ppt

And these are the tracks I used – which were mainly just thrown together on the spot:

  • As people came in I played through tracks from The Album Leaf – Into the Blue Again.
  • Harronell – Archangel, from their self-titled album. Only available (I think) from Proost.
  • The Album Leaf – Another Day [Revised] from In a Safe Place
  • And finished with Sigur Ros – Hoppipolla from Takk…

Subverting the Empire

Update: 19/06 – Posted a second, more organised/developed post here – Subverting the Empire 2.

20/06 – Paul has a really helpful reflection on Ian's and my own comments about the day here on Prodigal Kiwi.

"The Bristol CYM table"

Went to the new CMS building in Oxford today for a Blah… day led by Brian Walsh and Sylvia Keesmaat instead of a day of lectures at CYM in Bristol. Brian and Sylvia spoke about Subverting the Empire, from their book Colossians Remixed – which is a kind of alternative commentary on Colossians with an emphasis on the context of the Roman Empire and Jewish tradition.

The day was really interesting – learnt a lot about context and biblical interpretation, as well as fuelling a few other reflections to do with the church and culture.

The first thing I found really eye-opening was about the need to interpret scripture through 4 different contexts. I think I had two of these before but not the whole set.

  • Context of the Jewish scriptures/tradition
  • The Macro-Context – Roman Empire
  • The Micro-Context / Microcosm – eg. in Colossians the context of the church in Colosse
  • Our own cultural context

The big thing was about Paul being subversive towards the Roman Empire through the letter – and about how he presents an alternate narrative/story to the story presented by the Roman occupation. The problem is whether in presenting an alternative, Paul's intention is to build an alternative way of living – ie. Christendom, Kingdom of God – or simply an alternative way of living under Roman rule.

And if Paul calls the Colossians to reject the culture of their day, is he calling us to isolate ourselves from ours? Or do we pick and choose what is helpful or not? Or embrace culture? Neither of these three seems entirely satisfactory to me – I'm still trying to search for the "third way".

So, there's some initial thoughts – spending a lot of time reflecting of Christ and culture, and the church and culture at the moment, and today has provided a lot of fuel to keep reflecting on. Hopefully, as I begin to explore this more I'll keep posting some ideas and thoughts.

The silence ends…

Wow, over a month since I last blogged… Managed to get caught up in life and the Lab and unfortunately in the busyness the blog got forgotten.

Although I am heading towards the final deadlines for my first year at CYM in a month, I promise I will try and get in some regular updates on the blog – even if they’re only little ones. Rather than an actual post, this is more of a commitment to try and write more. Must. Try. Harder. ;-)

Got a lot of big things planned for the Lab leading up to the new academic year in September which I’ll hopefully discuss a little on here in the next few weeks. Can’t actually believe the first year is nearly done. Heading off to an inpromptu BBQ this evening (summer is great, if a little distracting from work). In Trinity Methodist Church (Del’s church) tomorrow morning before we have Del’s official goodbye service with the Lab in the evening.

The Sacrificial God – Guest blog on Sunday Papers

http://www.sundaypapers.org.uk/?p=428

Richard Passmore, one of my CYM tutors, asked me to do put some thoughts down as a guest post on his blog, Sunday Papers, after an interesting discussion about universalism over lunch.

It’s quite edgy stuff, but I’m convinced that they are important questions that we need to be asking as the people of God ;-)

The post is here. You can join the discussion with your own thoughts by adding a comment on Richard’s site.

We hang our lives upon Your mercy

Oh, just wanted to quickly link to the "liturgy" I used last Thursday lunchtime for the CYM guys in Bristol. It was a really good time of just existing together in God’s presence, made even more special I thought by the feeling of community as everyone contributed and prayed and brought something… I’m sure a wise man once said something about that in some book or letter or something… ;-)

So anyway here it is: http://www.btinternet.com/~smallritual/section8/mercy.html – the words are by a guy called Steve Collins and they’re just amazing. I split it into three sections, using the first two verses to start, the next couple in the middle somewhere to start a time of prayer, and then the last couple to finish.
